The 5 Types of Blog Posts that Experts Write

If you want to be an expert in something, it takes dedication and a lot of work. If you want to be known as an expert in something, you also have to know how present yourself as one. Bloggers who are known experts write in way that enforces that image. There are 5 basic types of posts that experts write, and you can apply these to your own blogging.

Type 1: The Definition Post
The definition post is a long-standing method for presenting yourself as an expert. In this type of post, you define terms, a concept, a practice, often with examples and links. For example, if I were running a landscaping company and I had a blog, I could write a post that defines common landscaping approaches. If I was a search engine marketer, I could write a post defining some of the more esoteric search marketing terms. Sometimes these kinds of posts are almost like miniature glossaries. As such, they often get good search traffic and backlinks (links back to the post from other sites).
Here’s an example shamelessly pulled from my own blog. The post is called What is a blog?Yes, I have the gall to define what a blog is, even though it’s been done before by many others. This shows how well I understand blogs and blogging, and this helps to establish that I’m an expert. This is one of the most popular posts on my blog and gets great search traffic.

Type 2: The Resource Post
Experts have links to great resources that beginners don’t. One way an expert becomes viewed as even more of an expert is by sharing these resources with others and helping others become experts in their own right. The most powerful kind of this type of post is for resources created by the expert, rather than by someone else. For example, an expert home brewer who is also a bit of a geek (funny how those two things go together) might have created some home brewing software anyone can download or purchase. Here’s a great example of this kind of resource post from SEO Book.
The most common form of resource post contains one or more links to other online resources. The less well-known but powerful these resources are, the better for your reputation as an expert. You can also go for completeness: an exhaustive list of resources will attract visitors and links. For example, here’s Mashable’s 17 AdSense Plugins for WordPress.

Type 3: The Tutorial Post
Providing step-by-step instructions shows you are an authority on what you’re teaching. This is especially true if your tutorial covers something not many people know how to do. Small Potato, a WordPress theme designer wrote a post on how to do hover menus in WordPress themes. Not all tutorial posts have to be detailed step-by-step instructions. Often, you can provide more general instruction just as well, though this might depend on your audience.
There’s been a growing trend towards video tutorials. Compared to all the writing and screenshots needed for a written tutorial, a video tutorial can be a great teaching tool. Here’s a tutorial video on how to make sushi rice.

Type 4: The Story Post
Relating a story that showcases how you work and how people benefit from working with you is an important tool for experts. In You Get What You Pay For, Thomas of English Cut tells a story as a lesson that reinforces why bespoke tailoring costs more than ready-to-wear.

Type 5: The Opinion Post
Opinion posts are the kind of posts amateurs tend to write when they don’t have much knowledge or experience! But when an expert writes an opinion post, that opinion is based on knowledge and experience. An expert will refer to her knowledge and experience in her post as a way to give credit to her opinion. A great example of this type of post is at business guru Tom Peters‘ blog. Tom has an incredible wealth of experience helping business succeed and he uses that knowledge and experience to inform opinions on things that aren’t pure business, but which affect and are affected by business.
Your Challenge
Write a new post in one (or all!) of the expert types and share the links to them via the comments. Be sure to tell us what type of expert post you chose.

The 10 Basic Promotion Tools Every Blogger Should Be Using

In order to make money off of your blog, you need to make sure that people are reading your blog. The more traffic that you have on each post, the more income you are likely to be able to make from blogging. That means that you need to be doing everything that you can in order to drive people to your blog posts.
Here are ten basic promotion tools that you should be using to drive people to your blog:
1Craigslist. There are many different ways that you can use Craigslist to get people to land on your blog posts. Whether youre creating online blogging events that you promote through the site or simply advertising a great post in the aœgeneral section, this tool always snags a new audience for your work.
2.Link to yourself. In every post that you write, you should be directing people to other posts that youve written. You can do this through aœrelated links at the end of your post or you can do it simply through direct text links. Dont just link to posts within one blog but cross-link to promote your blogs work on the other blogs and websites that you write for (as appropriate to the terms of your blogging contracts, of course).
3.Email signature. Your email signature should have a link to your blog. It should also have a second link to a specific favorite article that you believe a majority of people that you email would be interested in reading.
4. Business cards. Most bloggers dont carry business cards but every blogger should. These should be handed out whenever you get the chance. They can be placed at coffee shops and added to media kits. Yes, bloggers should have media kits.
5.Social bookmarking sites. You should be active on at least one of the major social bookmarking sites (Mixx, Digg, etc.) You may also want to be active on a social networking site (LinkedIn, Facebook) where you can have a link to your blog. Make sure to regularly promote your own blog posts through these sites to continually attract a bigger audience for your work.
6.Comments on others blogs. Hopefully you already know that this is one of the most important tools that you can use for bringing new traffic to your blog. Most basic comment sections include a place for you to add your blog link and you should.
7.Ping Technorati. Many bloggers are failing to make use of Technorati which is a great site for getting some basic traffic based on keywords. Claim your blog on the site so that it will be regularly updated every time that you add a new post. Then make sure to use Technorati tags at the end of your post.
8. Blog links on your resume. Many people neglect to include links on their resumes which is unfortunate since most resumes are sent through the Internet. Add a direct link to your blog as part of your contact information at the header of the resume. Also include links to specific posts that highlight the skills that you are emphasizing throughout the resume. Even if you dont get the job, you might get a new reader for your blog.
9.Add your blog to your bio. You probably have to publish your authors bio on a semi-regular basis. Make sure that it has a direct link to your blog so that people who are interested in who you are can make their way to your blog to find out.
10.Boasting. Most bloggers diminish what they do when they are asked about it. They say they blog, but they kind of laugh it off. Or they vaguely say that they write for the web. Word-of-mouth is the single biggest tool that you have at your disposal in terms of promoting your blog. You should be taking pride in what you do and spreading the word with confidence every chance that you get.
You probably didnt get into the business of blogging because you have a passion for marketing. In spite of this, you need to get a grasp on great promotion in order to draw people to your blog. Using these basic tools is a good start but you should also be regularly using new creative approaches to boost your blog promotion.
